Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season
This was even more powerpoint than usual, to the point where I'm not sure it was worth waiting for the BDs
メモリーズオフ -Innocent Fille-
I found the main conflict less engaging than 9 and thought the heavy side dragged on for way too long. I also didn't like how prevalent Noelle was in every aspect of the game, even outside of her routes (of which she had multiple!). I would've liked to see a shorter true route and a greater variety of side heroines to break up the monotony.
Memoff ranking thus far: 9 > 8
メモリーズオフ 双想 ~Not always true~
This was my first memoff so I wasn't sure what to expect. It ended up being way more dramatic than I thought it would. Nene is the devil. I found the MC off-putting. The adults were infuriatingly useless and the bad ends were brutal.
I don't like that they locked Nene's route behind Sae's, because that was a sour note to end the game on. Having said that, Sae/Nene's routes make you see everything in a very different (negative) light, so I don't know if I'd recommend doing the side heroines' routes before or after. Those girls are going to be in for a rough time...
They tried to do a supernatural horror theme for the hidden route but funnily enough it wasn't nearly as scary as the main route. Yui note has nothing on Nene note... Also, we never got an answer to what was up with the woman watering the empty red pots. Is that a reference to a prior entry?
I think the reason this had such a strong impression on me is because a) I went in totally blind, and b) organized religion is a complicated topic for me. All in all, it definitely made me want to check out the other entries, though I hope they're a bit more lighthearted...
終わる世界とバースデイ
This suffered from glacial pacing and some pretty cheesy horror moments (I CAN FLYYY!!). I also hate these "world within a world" twists where everything you've grown to like about the characters and the setting turns out to be false. Having said that, it still managed to convince me to stick around til the end. I think if you treat it like a B-movie you’ll have more fun with it than if you go in expecting something mind-blowing.
